Owners Select HSA to Build Addition for Historic Home in Ann Arbor’s Old West Side

SALINE, MI – Homeowner Services of America, Inc., a Saline-based home remodeling firm, has been selected to build a two-story addition with a finished attic for a home on West Washington Street in the Old West Side Historic District in Ann Arbor.

HSA will expand the home’s kitchen and first-floor bathroom, create office space and a second-floor bedroom, and relocate the laundry facilities – all while remaining true to the home’s historical significance and character.

The home’s owners, James and Sheryl Gilmore, interviewed and received cost estimates from three remodeling firms. The Gilmores selected HSA based on the company’s capabilities and experience, plus the positive references they received from other homeowners who have chosen HSA for their remodeling projects.

Ed Kelly of Kelly-Tinker Architects in Ann Arbor designed the remodeling project. "The design," noted David Rhoads, HSA’s owner and president, "meets the Gilmores’ need for more living space while blending in with the existing structure. It also satisfies the preservation requirements of the Old West Side Historic District Commission."

Kelly-Tinker Architects obtained the Historic District Commission’s approval for the design. HSA is now following through on construction with careful selection of materials and attention to details.

"Like every remodeling project, the Gilmore home is presenting us with some specific challenges," said Rhoads. "The narrow lot provides limited access to the rear of the home, where the addition is being built. We also uncovered an abandoned cistern partially in the addition’s footprint, and a diseased tree had to be removed. Plus, we are working next to a landscaped pond, which has further limited our room to maneuver." Yet the project, per Rhoads, is moving ahead successfully. HSA began construction in November 2008, with completion scheduled for February 2009. Exterior painting will follow in the spring.

David Rhoads of HSA has earned the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation from the American Association of Retired People (AARP) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Rhoads is a past president of the Home Builders Association of Washtenaw County (HBAWC), and a current executive director of the state HBA. The HBAWC honored Rhoads as the 2007 Builder of the Year.

Rhoads is also a member of the Saline City Council. In 2004, the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce selected Rhoads as Saline’s Citizen of the Year in recognition of his community involvement.
